Learning Takes Time — Parents Discover the Challenge of Mastery

When my daughter was struggling with her homework, I couldn't help but ask, "Why don't you understand?"
The moment I said those words, I felt a sharp pain in my chest.

Learning really does take time.
Even though I know that in my head, I tend to forget when I'm in front of my children.

That day, I started a new lesson.
I wanted to empathize with my daughters' feelings, even if just a little.

This is a story about how difficult learning is and how I realized my own immaturity as a parent.

I blurted out, "Why don't you understand?"

When my eldest daughter was in the first grade of elementary school, I found myself asking her, "Why don't you understand?"

The girl then replied in a weak voice:

"Well, it's my first time, so I don't know..."

A few days after I was struck by those words, I came across the following article in the newspaper.

[Parents also take lessons - they understand how difficult it is to learn]

If parents also take lessons,

You will realize that you will not be able to master what you are taught immediately.

Since then, I have never uttered the words, "Why don't you understand?"
It seems so obvious, so why didn't I notice it?

The person my children want most to be close to is none other than me.

Children are also living their lives to the fullest every day.

My eldest daughter is now in the third grade of elementary school, and my second daughter is in the first grade.

There are many things to do throughout the day apart from studying.
They talk about their favorite books during breaks, or say things like, "We went on a field trip to the supermarket during social studies class and it was so much fun!"

I picked up the paper my friend dropped, but he said, "Don't take it!" and I was sad.
"I wanted the teacher to call on me, but no matter how many times I raised my hand, I couldn't get it, so I was disappointed."
"Today my friend spilled my school lunch side dish and I couldn't eat it."

...Sometimes they tell me stories like that.

Every day at school, they learn new things, sometimes having fun and sometimes struggling, and they grow as a result.
There may be times in your daily life when you forget, make mistakes, or struggle.

What if you come home tired and your beloved parent reproaches you by asking, "Why don't you understand?"
I thought that if I were in the opposite position, I would feel bad.

That's why I decided.
"People cannot immediately learn what they have learned. They forget and make mistakes.
But that's okay. You can just relearn it again."

First of all, I want to embody that myself and empathize with the feelings of children.
That is my motivation for studying now.

What I want to show my children

People forget 70% of what they learned yesterday the next day.
And we make mistakes. That's normal.

The important thing is to move forward with the mindset that "I can just learn it again."
To learn and to have fun.

First of all, I want to put it into practice myself and show it to my children.

Learning in 2025

In 2025, I'm challenging myself to become a bookkeeper, a financial planner (FP), and learn a foreign language.
I would like to gradually take on higher level qualification exams and become able to help visitors to Japan who are in trouble on the streets with foreign languages.
Little by little, I am able to do things that I couldn't do in the past.

And now, one of the things I incorporate into my daily learning is
⏱️ "English Conversation Time Trial" and 📻 "Radio English Conversation".

  • Radio English ConversationLearn the basics and expressions thoroughly,
  • English Conversation Time Trialto train your explosive power.

With this combination, English is gradually becoming something I can use.

In another article, I will introduce in detail how I am studying with "English Conversation Time Trial"✨️

🌸 We are also looking for people who are relearning or studying English 🌸
